Character History: Gadreel's history spans time greater than humans have known it. As such, we'll begin at the beginning -- at least for humanity. As God's most trusted angel, Gadreel was chosen to guard Eden from the devil, Lucifer. Whether because of his love for humanity or his apparent gullibility, Gadreel failed at this task (or maybe the idea of standing up against an archangel and getting vaporized wasn't his bag, who knows). Lucifer entered the garden, and humanity was forever cursed with the presence of evil. For his crimes, Gadreel was imprisoned by Heaven.
You would think that Heaven's prison would be a little bit heavier on the penance and lighter on the torture, but evidently that was not the case. Gadreel spent nearly all of humanity's existence being tortured by the angel Thaddeus, with few people to comfort him other than his fellow prisoner, Abner.
Not much else goes on for Gadreel other than whole incredibly painful torture thing right up until Castiel, a fellow angel (and possibly fellow chump) is tricked by God's scribe, Metatron, into casting all the angels out of heaven. That brings us to the more-or-less current time of 2013. Cast down from heaven, Gadreel is both injured and weakened by the fall to Earth. Gadreel hears the prayers of Dean Winchester, who is praying for any angel to come and help his brother Sam, and boards a bus to Dean's location. When he arrives, Gadreel is confronted by another angel who wishes to extract Castiel's location out of Dean - and with the help of Dean, he is able to defeat the angel. The effort manages to knock him unconscious, however, and when he wakes he is trapped in a circle of Holy Oil. Understandably, Dean doesn't automatically trust someone who saved his life and just happens to be a vessel-possessing angel.
Gadreel makes the choice to introduce himself to Dean as Ezekiel, presumably either because he himself saw that Ezekiel died in the fall or because he assumed that he did. Ezekiel is, according to Castiel, a 'good soldier' -- someone trustworthy and reliable (exactly what Gadreel wishes he was). He convinces Dean to trick Sam into agreeing to be possessed by the angel, but is forthright in his reasoning: he can heal Sam from the inside out while healing his own damaged angel form inside of the brother. Gadreel seems genuine in his desire to help Sam heal, likely because he sees it as a way to partly cancel out the pain he has caused humanity by allowing Lucifer into the garden.
While healing Sam Winchester's body from the inside out, Gadreel proves himself to be quite clever. He is unwilling to put Sam's body at risk, and when Sam is threatened (at first by demons, and eventually later a shaman-gone-wrong) Gadreel takes over Sam's body. When he slays the demons, however, he uses the demon-killing knife that Sam and Dean possess, making it possible for Dean to explain the demons' deaths without arousing suspicion from Sam. He also feeds Dean information from angel radio that he thinks might be helpful: one of the angels, Bartholomew, is actively collecting vessels and seeking out Castiel. Dean, while appreciative, seems perturbed to see an angel speaking through his brother's body. Evidently, he really does want to help the Winchesters: he resurrects not only Castiel, but also Dean's friend Charlie Bradbury while he is possessing Sam. This is to the detriment of healing his angelic powers, but he does not hesitate to help when he is asked (someone might have a chip on their shoulder over being useless, okay?).
Once Gadreel runs into Metatron, the angel responsible for casting everyone else out of Heaven, the real trouble starts. Metatron convinces Gadreel to be his second in command for creating the new heavenly order, assuring him that this will erase his shameful past over the garden and make the other angels respect him again. Although he is hesitant, Gadreel agrees to Metatron's condition that he must prove his loyalty and kills Kevin Tran, a prophet. Dean finds him doing this and attempts to pursue Gadreel, but he escapes. His second 'proof' is to kill his friend Abner; while he does not wish to, Abner tells Gadreel while they are speaking that happiness is worth whatever price you must pay for it. Desperate to redeem himself, Gadreel takes this as enough permission and kills Abner. Distracted from the emotional toll that this death has taken on him, he is able to be knocked unconscious by a pursuing Castiel.
Using Crowley's techniques for probing into the brain of an angel, Dean and Castiel finally find out Gadreel's true name. By allowing Crowley to possess Sam's body alongside Gadreel, the team successfully alert Sam to Gadreel's presence and he is expelled to his original vessel. He continues to work with Metatron, collecting angels for Metatron's cause using the Horn of Gabriel. Any angels who do not want to join Metatron's sides are killed by Gadreel, with the exception of one (who, it is revealed by Metatron, was supposed to lead Castiel to them). Predictably, again used as bait, Gadreel is kidnapped by the Winchesters. Castiel is abducted by Metatron, and Metatron proposes a trade for the two. While in the custody of the Winchesters, Gadreel tries to convince Dean to kill him: he obviously feels remorseful for killing his fellow angels, and feels that dying for his cause at the hands of Dean would be a noble way to meet an end. Unfortunately, Dean chooses instead to beat Gadreel unconscious (does anyone see a pattern, here?). Once he is given back to Metatron, Gadreel asks whether his capture was part of the new God's plan - Metatron states that it was an unexpected turn of events, causing Gadreel to begin to distrust Metatron.
This distrust is compounded when Castiel asks to speak to Gadreel alone in order to try and convince him to leave Metatron's side: they are attacked by Metatron's men, and Gadreel is forced to flee. He returns later to tell Castiel that although he understands that he may not be entirely on the right side, he feels he cannot abandon his cause. Castiel asks him to be a spy for the 'other side' in Metatron's base, and Gadreel neither agrees nor disagrees. The final straw comes when Metatron commands Gadreel to begin brainwashing angels on Castiel's side to kill themselves using a powerful spell that vaporizes angels, killing Metatron's agents in the process. Gadreel finally sees that he has made a mistake and that Metatron is a megalomaniac and a sociopath. He teleports to the Winchester's bunker to make an alliance with Castiel and the brothers, only to be attacked by Dean (using the First Blade, a weapon meant to kill Knights of Hell). Terrified, he flees in a vehicle and collapses on the side of the road not too far from the bunker. Castiel heals Gadreel's wounds against Gadreel's advice and takes him to the portal to Heaven that Metatron has been using to travel between Earth and Heaven. He attempts a 'wookie maneuver' by pretending that Castiel is his prisoner, but is unsuccessful and ends up in Heaven's prison again.
Understandably frustrated and feeling like he is out of options, Gadreel uses the spell he had been having the suicide angels use to kill himself and break the walls of the prison so Castiel can escape and help the Winchesters defeat Metatron by breaking the angel tablet. Before he plunges his angel blade into his chest, he tells Castiel that he finally understands his mission: to protect humanity, who cannot protect themselves. He states that he has for too long let his selfish desire and his fear keep him from being responsible for his own destiny, and hopes that he may be remembered as the angel who gave Heaven a second chance and not just the one who let the Snake into the garden.
Abilities/Special Powers: As an angel, Gadreel has access to the following powers:
-Immortality
-Above average strength and endurance
-Ability to hear human prayers and 'angelic radio'
-Regenerative powers
-Healing, up to and including resurrection
-Electronic disruption
-Smiting
-Telekinesis and telepathy (requires touch in both cases)
-Bodily possession (requires 'consent')
He also has some skill at spell-casting, as he both activated the Horn of Gabriel using a spell and sacrificed himself using a spell with complex sigils.
Third-Person Sample: He wakes to the feeling of grass brushing against his cheek, cool and wet. It is in stark contrast to the bright, searing pain he was experiencing only a moment or two ago, the flash of his own grace detonating much closer to blinding than he remembered the others' being. He had felt at peace in that moment despite knowing that he was going to die, for he was certain that he had finally chosen his own path. No more running, no more hiding or lying to people to make them trust him. They would, perhaps, remember him as someone who had finally made something of his life by ending it.
It makes waking up all the more disorienting. He pushes himself to a sitting position, his head spinning. The first thing that comes into his vision once it stops swimming is -- flowers.
He can't help the dry, bitter laugh. Perhaps this is God -- the real God, not that heathen Metatron -- punishing him yet again. To be surrounded by a garden forever, reminded of your greatest shame? He can think of nothing so torturous, save for having to kill Abner again.
"Of course." The laugh is a little more desperate as he pushes himself to his feet. He feels -- restored, somehow, something he wouldn't expect from a world built for his punishment. And the flowers in this place, they did not match the flowers of Eden. Nothing is as perfect as it had looked there, untouched and unspoiled.
Perhaps this is something else entirely. Gadreel gives himself another minute to get his vision in order and then stands, experimentally stretching out one leg and bending the other. Everything seemed to be in working order...
"Well," he says to himself, or perhaps the flowers around him, "We should be making the best of this place." He isn't wholly convinced that he isn't being trapped here by one of the other angels, somehow -- he isn't a popular figure among them, especially now -- but he cannot sit still. He sat still for millennia in his cage, and he had grown bitter. That wasn't something he could afford to do again.
First-Person Sample: [As the feed clicks on, Gadreel looks distinctly ... uncomfortable. Those who are sharp crayons might notice that peeking out from beneath the hoodie he's wearing are a few Enochian symbols carved into his skin, weeping fresh blood.]
I must admit to being confused. This -- is not what I was expecting.
[What he was expecting was blissful nothingness, perhaps tinged with a brief moment of pride: he had finally done the right thing, he was sure. He looks down to the ground, then back into the feed.
He's apparently collected himself, at least a little.]
I am sure that the time for apologies has long passed, but I cannot help but feel they are warranted.
If any of those that I have wronged are here, Kevin Tran -
[His voice catches, briefly,]
Abner - I would apologize in person, if you would have me. I bear you no ill will if you would prefer me to stay away, and I will respect your wishes. I mean only to make the offer, to begin repairing what my cowardice wrought.
[It occurs to him, then, that he ought to figure out exactly what's going on -- if he can.]
Any of those of you that can offer information about this place, you would be doing me a great service by letting me know.
